High Hospital Bed Occupancy by Motorcycle Crash Victims
Recently, motorcycle crash victims have accounted for nearly 50% of hospital bed occupancy in Nairobi. Therefore, improving rider safety is of paramount importance. In particular, Boda-Boda riders need to take extra care, as they represent 90% of all motorcycles in Kenya. However, this is a critical issue that requires urgent action not just from Boda-Boda riders, but from all of us. No one can afford to remain a bystander.
Every day, 5 to 10 people lose their lives, and 15 to 20 people suffer serious injuries in accidents involving Boda-Boda.

In response of current situation, Nairobi City County is moving to strengthen Helmet-use regulations for Boda-Boda (motorcycle taxi) riders and passengers to curb preventable head injuries and deaths. Director of Medical Services Dr. Essam Ahmed emphasized that while helmet standards are central to reducing head injuries, broader social determinants of health must also be addressed to mitigate the long-term impact of road traffic injuries on individuals and families. This standard will improve Safety for thousands of riders and passengers who rely on motorcycles for daily transport, marking a critical step in the County’s broader public-health and road-safety agenda.
